ABOUT
Kate Skelly is an Artist, Gallery Director, and Educator living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. She studied Art and Art History as an undergraduate at Kenyon College and received an MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University. Her pieces are hand-painted using sgraffito and Mishima techniques.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is a negotiation between seemingly contradictory impulses —broad gesture and minute detail. I try to paint ceramics with as free and loose a hand as possible. I aim to imbue my work with a sense of playfulness and ease. I also love intricate details and patterns, however. I relish the meditative aspect of carving hundreds of tiny lines into a piece. My work hangs somewhere in the balance between these two perspectives.
